Emergency resources

Who to contact in the event of a medical emergency.

Life threatening

If your, or someones else's, life is in danger or sustained a serious injury, you should dial 999 and ask for an ambulance or go to an A&E.

You can call 999 from any public payphone, and mobile phones even if they do not have a SIM card or call plan.

Be prepared to provide:

  • Information about the person in need of help and their current condition
  • The current location of the person needing help
  • Your own details

If you are the person in need of help, tell the operator where you are first - this will let them get help to you if you were to lose consciousness.

Call 999 now

Misuse of the 999 service and hoax calls are a criminal offence. You could face a maximum penalty of up to six months in prison, or a fine up to £5,000.

IMPORTANT: The button above will work only if the device you are currently using can make phone-calls.

Not life threatening

If you or someone else needs medical attention, and you feel the problem is a medical emergency (rather than life threatening), you should call 111 (during the day or night), and you will be triaged and given an appointment to attend an A&E if necessary.

During the current COVID-19 restrictions, you must only attend an A&E if the condition is life threatening, or if you have an appointment to attend.

If you believe the condition could deteriorate quickly, or moving them could cause further harm, call 999 instead.
